There is yet to be developed a simple and tamper-free mechanism to grant students a place to write in a farm launched for that purpose.
It should appear finished to the new student.
It should know the student through a sign-up.
It should belong to the student when created.
It should not expose a student's email address.
It should be outfitted with class resources.
It should admit late signups.
It should make sense to students and teachers.
We've made the federation more visible to strangers by crawling it and publishing what we find. A batch of student sites not yet claimed are subject to unwanted abuse.
Sites should be 'born claimed' or crawling should ignore unclaimed sites. The latter is weak protection because anyone can write a crawler.
